Meaning and responsibility in AI-assisted design

Burak Tosun’s abstract, “Idrak” and “İnşaa” in AI-Assisted Architectural Design: Rethinking Form, “Mana” and Responsibility through Yûnus Emre, has been accepted for an oral presentation at ICAAD 2026.

The research considers a question that is becoming increasingly important in architecture: when artificial intelligence can generate form quickly, how should designers think about meaning, judgement and responsibility?

Drawing conceptually on Yûnus Emre, the work explores the relationship between idrak — understanding or discernment — and inşaa — making or constructing — in AI-assisted architectural design. It asks how design decisions can remain attentive to context, intention and consequence.

How this connects to MOLD’s research

This question sits within MOLD’s AI, Meaning & Architectural Judgement research direction: how a generated possibility becomes a considered architectural decision. It brings a conceptual perspective to the lab’s interest in making design rationale, human judgement and responsibility visible in AI-assisted workflows.

Alongside MOLD’s separate data-centre and early-stage design research, it opens a complementary discussion about how designers evaluate options and account for their consequences. The accepted abstract concerns AI-assisted architectural design; it is not presented as a data-centre study or a validated design method.

Conference milestone

The conference will take place from 23 to 25 October 2026.

This is an abstract acceptance for an international conference oral presentation. It is not yet a journal publication; the full paper remains a separate next stage of the research.

Ideas grow through conversation.

Let’s explore.
